Website Special Effects
added another mod to the forums. Loeg asked for snow. its all set. but not snowing yet. Its a very very easy mod. I uploaded the javascript file and the snow images. All that is left is to do this: then reset the cache. easy Just let me know when you want it to snow and when it should stop ...

Re: Captain's Log
The damned script is bogging FF. Affecting my key handler speed most... I'm typing too fast for it. Yuck.
Might I suggest var flakesMax = 48; (was 128) var flakesMaxActive = 24; (was 64) instead?
Maybe higher... dunno. Just know it's not very efficient right now... likely bogging slower computers even more?

Re: Captain's Log
Get Google's chrome!! I set it way lower for a snow drizzle effect rather than a snow storm. Any better for you?

Re: Captain's Log
A little better, but gets slower as more appear. It's not the most efficient thing, but it's cute.

Re: Captain's Log
set it to a trickle '2' and '1'.
not sure its worth it.
looking for suggestions - like remove it (?)
might be more functional to set the background images to a snowflake...

Re: Captain's Log
FYI Sounds like the scrollbar issue has to do with the objects (divs) that hold the snowflakes running off the right edge and triggering the browser window to think there's "more" to be shown... thus it pops up a scrollbar to get to this imaginary content.
It's not related to how many snowflakes, dad. Just the chances that one triggers that confusion. Don't let this drive you nuts. Not your fault. I don't get this happening, by the way.
If I get a chance I will program another script for us.
Or, as daddio suggests, we could just put a snowflake as a backdrop, and I could put a santa hat on the shark, if you want...

Re: Website Special Effects
Dad, if you want to do this, cool. If not, you can get me to do it (I will simply need access).
My SUGGESTIONS - I can be overruled, peoples, so do so at will.
a) Swap out the site_logo.gif with the one I posted. (edit: wait... are there separate logos for each style? Are these styles user-determined!? If so, I've got some more work to do on various logos... there's some tricks around the anti-aliasing that look like shite if the bground changes...)
b) The snow would perform better with these changes made to snowstorm.js: ... var flakesMax = 20; // original was 128; var flakesMaxActive = 10; // original was 64; ... var targetElement = "logo-mid";
The result is a nice storm in the header of the site. It tends to be less of a bog.
I tried (and fixed) the snow piling up, which is cute, but starts to hog resources after a while. There's another effect where the snow sits but melts shortly (that's where flakesMax comes in), which I have also fixed if we want to use it, but it's not worth the extra clunkiness IMHO.

Re: Captain's Log
I thought about that. I need some educating though. What is the period which Hannukah entails? Has it bled forward like Christmas (we are in "Christmas season" as of Thanksgiving) ? Is there a more succinct time frame to abide by? The 7 candles are lit/unlit over 7 days, correct? Is it bad form to display them incorrectly? Even so... I can only come up with one way to display it thus far: at the top left before the "H". Otherwise the shark is jumping up to bite it which is not the imagery I'm after. I'm saving THAT effect for next year's Thanksgiving... I'll put a turkey being snapped at by Brucie the Great White.

Re: Website Special Effects
That's alright. We're about to get hit with a major ice storm in Oklahoma. It should put those 2 little flakes to shame. (Pics will probably follow).
